Ongoing Assignments

Below are current projects that are affiliated with UN Volunteers and where ICTs are being applied to development. The information below includes details regarding types of volunteers (UNV Internationals, UNV Nationals, University Volunteers, or Corporate Volunteers), as well as collaborating organizations and funding resources. This table is updated regularly.

Barbados & OECS

  ICT Specialist (IUNV)
As part of the Community Development programme, UNDP is seeking to support countries in the establishment of community management teams, community assessments, development of community work plans, and of the assessments of Community Development Divisions. The development goal is to support the establishment of Community Resource and Internet Centres (CoRICs). UNDP will support the piloting of Community Resource and Internet Centres (CoRICs) in 4 communities in the Windward Islands of Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados.

CoRICs will form an integral part of the quest for solutions to eradicate absolute poverty since their institution will broaden access to information, education, and training at the community level. Poor communities and individuals will have access to these tools and facilities in order to develop an orientation towards self-determination and self-reliance.


Brazil  

Program Coordinator for "Comunidade Ativa"
In cooperation with "Comunidade Ativa", UNV is undertaking a project to strengthen IT capacities in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. The objective is to create universal access to information technologies in the communities through training activities. The UN Volunteer, based in Itaquiraí, is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the project, which includes evaluating the development of IT use in the region as well as elaborating appropriate training for the promotion of local income generating activities.

 

 

The Government is building up a national network of information and mechanism of information coordination through interlinking nine hubs from different sectorial activities, that will play the role of e-information focal points in their own sector. [more]

 

Benin

Education and ICT Specialists (2 NUNVs)
Two National UN Volunteers (NUNVs) are assigned to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education within the Sustainable Development Networking Program (SDNP).
They support the integration of IT in primary and secondary school curricula, establish internet connections for schools, educate IT trainers in each school, and set up youth internet groups.


Bhutan  

Volunteers affiliated with UNITeS are in collaboration with the Government of Bhutan, which has launched a comprehensive strategy to introduce the use of ICT in many official institutions, working in the context of a new project focused on institutional strengthening. [more]

 

Botswana

Health and ICT Specialists (1 IUNV)
One International UN Volunteer (IUNV) is responsible for the education of trainers in ICT programs for the Ministry of Health (MoH) on Arv programme. The volunteer develops training programs for different Health Workers on ICT and assists UNDP in supporting an initiative to train and network teachers on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment through the application of ICTs.


Central African Republic  

UNITeS specialist is supporting the University of Bangui in strengthening capacity for high-quality ICT Education for students and also internal and public information mechanisms. [more]

 

Chile

 

A National UN Volunteer (NUNV), working with UNDP Chile and a NGO in Chile, has helped to establish the nation's first Online Volunteering programme. The NUNV is working with staff from UN Volunteers to further refine the program and better prepare NGOs using the service to involve Online Volunteers. [more]

 

Ecuador  

Within a new Ecuador-Peru Binational Border Zone Development Plan, a UNITeS Volunteer is assisting in setting up an interactive information system supporting the Binational Plan. [more]

(University Volunteer under UNITeS Assignments)
  Computer Teacher for ACORVOL
On behalf of the "Asociación Coordinadora del Voluntario del Guayas" (ACORVOL), two volunteers are in charge of training the organization's volunteers on using basic data processing software and web design programs. Additionally, they are providing support through designing ACORVOL's website.

 

Ecuador

Internet Specialist (IUNV)
An International UN Volunteer (IUNV) works with local and national CSOs (Civil Society Organisations) in designing and producing web sites to allow them to better communicate and present information about their work.


 

Cisco-UNDP Least Developed Countries Initiative

Bringing the Cisco Networking Academy Program (CNAP) to LDC countries will allow students the same educational opportunities that are currently being offered to students in more than 80 countries. UN Volunteers will help the academies to become instruments of human development in each country, going beyond standard offerings in computer networks training. [more]

 

Global
(International Union of Local Authorities)
 

Establishment of Information Systems to help initiate City-to-City Partnerships in Ecuador and Zimbabwe

IULA (International Union of Local Authorities) together with UN Volunteers have created a project to foster direct co-operation between cities in sharing expertise on urban development. Volunteers affiliated with UNITeS are facilitating the needed information flow between local authorities. [more]

 

Honduras

IT Specialist (IUNV)
AICAT - Honduras developed during 2001 the denominated experience "Mobile Informatics", a project that provides basic computer knowledge to community leaders, single mothers, youth, semi-rural community teachers that do not have direct access to this type of training. The objective of this project is to provide youth and teachers with basics, that will allow them to use computers in their work places, to contribute to the technological progress of the country and to open a new horizon for future generations.


Honduras

ICT Specialists (2 NUNVs)
One National UN Volunteer (NUNV) works in the context of the CERCA project to strengthen the capacities of the project and their target stakeholders in the use of ICTs for their local initiatives, sets up database and data archives with information about some municipalities, and facilitates the exchange and provision of socio-economic information to local stakeholders.
Another NUNV designs, installs and offers training and consultancy to establish web sites of Santa Rosa de Copán Municipality and Inter- municipal Council for Management of River Higuito Basin. The volunteer will provide as well training improving capacities of municipal staff and particulars in new Municipal Integrated Information System implemented.


Honduras
(University Volunteer Under UNITeS Assignment)
 

Honduras - Web Developer for UNV-UNDP
As part of the National Committee of the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) 2001, the volunteer helped to design, develop and maintain the official IYV website, which aims at promoting volunteerism in Honduras. Additionally, the volunteer provided assistance to the users of the system based on their day-to-day needs and ad-hoc requests, as well as offering training to the office users in updating information on the website.

 

 

Honduras - Junior Technical Adviser for UNDP and HONDUTEL
The volunteer was part of the project team 'Support to management, modernization and expansion of HONDUTEL' which does the design of the future telecom Network of Honduras (with a total investment of $ 225 million for the first phase only). The volunteer provided technical support by revising and elaborating Terms of Reference and technical specifications in the 25 sub-projects in modernization and expansion plans of HONDUTEL, as well as offering advice in operation systems, net maintenance and quality control.

India  

A team of Volunteers operating under UNITeS has supported rehabilitation activities in the state of Orissa after the devastation brought by the "Super Cyclone" in October 1999. [more]

 

 

India -Tourism Promotion Volunteer for Government of Orissa
The student volunteer assisted the Department of Tourism in its efforts to identify, develop and protect sensitive zones of eco tourist sites. Tasks comprised updating the website, coordinating tour operators with tourism promoters, and preparing promotional materials such as CD-ROMs and brochures.

India
(University Volunteer Under UNITeS Assignment)

 

India - Mass Communication and Journalism Volunteer for UNDP and Government of Orissa
In cooperation with the Department of Information and Public Relations, the student volunteer assisted with UNDP's media management ranging from circulation of in-house publications to organizing press meetings. The volunteer developed educational and awareness raising films for project clients for achieving the overall objective of sustainable human development. Furthermore, Government and UNDP personnel was trained in skills of video film production.

India - IT Facilitator
A student volunteer assisted the UNV IT Specialist in setting up the IT units at the District and Block levels. Support was given to the administration in its IT operations, a database driven website was developed, software and training modules for government officials implemented, and training for functionaries and District IT staff provided.

(University Volunteer Under UNITeS Assignment)
 

India - Finance and Accounts Volunteer for UNDP
Under supervision of the UNDP Team Leader, the primary tasks of the student volunteer were to enable the web to be used from field offices and to develop a client-server-based financial accounting software. Additionally, the volunteer devised a computerized payroll system for Orissa Hub Office Staff Members and provides training for the staff on the use of the financial software package.

India - Emergency Operation Volunteer for UNDP
The student volunteer provided assistance in operational planning processes to improve UNDP's disaster management. The volunteer performed a system study for the best use of ICT in emergencies and explored various ICT tools for catalyzing the emergency management, including the preparation of personnel and resource databases.

Jordan - IT Project Assistant for UNIFEM
The volunteer provided technical support in maintaining and developing both the UNIFEM as well as the Arab Women Connect (AWC) websites. The volunteer helped in the preparation of documents for online publishing, dealt with web site-related correspondence, and assisted in the organization of workshops and forums.

Jordan

Education ICT specialists (2 NUNVs)
Two National UN Volunteers (NUNVs) worked as part of the team of sectional specialists in the national telecenter network project by identifying existing educational material online and supporting local educators in developing content that can be accessed through the telecenters.


Lebanon

ICT Specialist (NUNV)
To achieve the goal of socio-economic rehabilitation in South Lebanon, the National UN Volunteer collected relevant data in cooperation with the local authorities and the program staff. The volunteer carryed out continuous assessments and studies to evaluate the situation of computer literacy and usage in order to advise possible actions as required. Preparation of computer training programs, supervision of the trainers as well as assistance in all technical issues, forms the backbone support.

 

Lesotho

Community and ICT Specialist (2 NUNVs)
Two National UN Volunteers (NUNVs) identifyed target communities where ICT installations should be provided in the context of a national Government Project and supported grassroots organizations, small business people, doctors and other relevant groups in the target populations to benefit from the internet and other ICTs.


Maldives
(Japanese Trust Fund)

IT Specialist (IUNV)
An International UN Volunteer (IUNV) helps to bridge the digital divide in remote and isolated islands especially through ICT as a part of the on-going UNDP Project and its parallel UNV SVF Project for Atoll Development for Sustainable Livelihood. Tasks include the co-ordination of the establishment of IT centres in 10 islands, technical and management advice to the ICT centres as well as the development of ICT awareness programmes at national level in support of an IT policy development exercise.


Mongolia

Support for Harnessing ICT for Sustainable Livelihoods in Mongolia.

This project seeks to contribute to the socio-economic empowerment of the Mongolian people by building their capacity to utilize ICT for sustainable livelihoods, to create a favorable environment for Mongolians to communicate freely between themselves and the world community, and to enable the setting up of a business environment which can be integrated into the world economy to increase the competitiveness of national products. Namibia  

UNITeS is collaborating with the Enterprise Namibia Foundation in their services to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). [more]

 

Nepal Specialist for Information Delivery and Dialogue Promotion for UNDP (NUNV)
UNDP's Gender and Social Development Unit in Kathmandu is carrying out a pilot project to empower women and girls in poor communities through information delivery and dialogue to address HIV/AIDS and other development needs. In support to this digital broadcast initiative, the volunteer's tasks include setting up the Internet link with the digital audio studio, installing the audio and computer equipment including software and providing assistance in all technical problems of the program.

 

Niger This UNV short-term assignment in July 2003 helped the main hospital in Niger's capital evaluate and update its information systems in partnership with the French association Congé Solidaire [more]

Assigned to the Information Services Office
An International UN Volunteer (IUNV) assists local staff in developing software and government databases provides training in programming and web site creation and maintenance at the government IT training center.


Swaziland
(Japanese Trust Fund)
Education and ICT Specialist (IUNV)
Working with UNDP, the Computer Education Trust and the Swaziland College of Technology (SCOT), the volunteer will build human/institutional capacity in SCOT for the use and application of ICTs in their educational curriculum.


Tanzania

A UNITeS Volunteer is working with the newly set up National ICT Council in joint venture with Government, UNDP and an e-think tank group. [more]

 

Thailand

This UNV short-term assignment (7 - 23 August, 2003) with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) involved maintaining a web site that serves as a "one-stop" location for all relevant regional drug control information. [more]

 

Trinidad and Tobago

ICT Specialist (1 IUNV)
An International UN VOlunteer (IUNV) supports the networking and connection needs of several organizations grouped in a regional Caribbean program designed to help prevent HIV/AIDS and to provide better conditions for HIV+ people.


Uzbekistan

National Focal Point for ICT (NUNV)
A National UN Volunteer conducts field research with particular attention to the project sites where the assistance form GOJ is involved focussed on promoting market economy, building infrastructure and reconstructing the social sector. Work with youth organizations, student associations, NGOs etc. on local ICT volunteering as well as cooperation with other donors and aid agencies involved in ICT promotion like UNDP. Provide TORs and conduct workshops and training for local ICT volunteers.
