Japanese UN Volunteer Daizen Oda has been formally recognized for his
role in a working group that has chosen winners of the Betinho Prize,
an award given out annually in Ecuador by the Association for Progressive
Communications (APC) in the field of information and communication technologies
for development.

Web casts held in association with United Nations Open Days in Geneva
featured current UNV program officer (and former UNITeS-affiliated
volunteer) Sean Osner in Jordan, Jinan Shafeq El Nakshabandy, a UNV
under the UNITeS initiative in Jordan, UNV Online Volunteering Specialist
Jayne Cravens in Bonn, Germany, and the inventor of the World Wide
Web, Tim Berners-Lee. The
archives are already available online for viewing.

A press release from UNDP that summarizes a key note address in Dubai,
United Arab Emirates in late October. The speech notes that the time
has come for Arab countries to prepare vigorously for the global information
society to benefit from greater productivity and services such as tele-medicine,
wired classrooms, community Internet access and e-government.

July 2001, calls for the harnessing new technologies, including information
and communications technology (ICT), to help transform the lives of
the poor.

UNITeS has been selected as a finalist in the prestigious Stockholm
Challenge for its very first initiative -- the Orissa Super Cyclone
Rehabilitation project.

The level of activity related to UNITeS is picking up, as is the interest
expressed by many institutions and individuals. UNITeS is gradually
moving from its pilot phase towards full implementation, which will
start in the last months of the year.

George Mason University and the UNV have signed an agreement establishing
the university as the first institution of higher learning to form a
volunteer-sending partnership with the UNITeS.
