Maldives
Bridging the Digital Divide in Isolated Areas
An International UN Volunteer (IUNV), funded by the Japanese Trust
Fund, coordinated the establishment of IT centers on ten islands
of the Maldives and gave technical support and management advice
to the ICT centers. This was part of the ongoing UNDP Project and
its parallel UNV SVF Project for Atoll Development for Sustainable
Livelihood to help bridge the digital divide in remote and isolated
islands. In addition, the IUNV developed ICT awareness programmes
at the national level to support an IT policy development exercise.
Guidance for Telecenters
From August 2002 to 2003, an International
UN Volunteer (IUNV) from Nepal assisted in formulating national ICT
policy. He gave guidance
on business plan formulation for community telecenters by exploring
income-generating activities and diversification of industries, with
the purpose of making the telecenters sustainable. In addition, he
helped develop the framework of the Digitally Empowered Development
of Island Communities of Maldives, funded by the UNDP Trust Fund.
