Common contributions by ICT Volunteers to help bridge the digital divide across development areas and institutions

The following list identifies types of contributions in relation to capacity development that can be applied to a wide range projects and institutions and are not specific of any development area:

  • Basic technological literacy (knowing how to use a computer and elementary applications, like e-mail, web browsers or word-processing)

  • Advanced user general ICT skills (creation and management of web sites and databases; creation of multimedia material)

  • Awareness raising of ICT for development possibilities among donor/developing country decision-makers (this will contribute to mainstream ICT into all areas of development)

  • Data collection (for statistical purposes, to track advancement towards meeting the MDG targets, or the way the World Meteorological Organization gathers climate data from thousands of locations around the world)

  • Development and use of graphical computer interfaces for illiterate people

  • Establishment and maintenance of electronic networks (as detailed in section 1 above).

  • Establishment and operation of community telecenters (where users can get information relevant to any development area)

  • Software development based on Open Source/Free Software code for all types of development applications.

  • Applications of ICT in disaster management (which affects all areas of human development)

  • Access and use of ICT for people with disabilities (so they can become actors and agents of development processes)

  • Use of mobile devices (PDAs, mobile phones, satellite radios) by development workers and stakeholders.
