Bringing IT Education to Rural Thailand
From July 2003 to May 2004, a National UN Volunteer (NUNV) helped
expand networking curriculums to rural parts of Thailand for one year
by way of the . The NUNV passed
the Cisco Networking Academy Program training and then extended this
opportunity to others. He assisted in establishing Academies and, by
partnering with the government, offered cheap PC and Internet access
to local residents. He also collaborated with donor organizations such
as USAID, UNIFEM and Peace Corps to bring the Cisco curriculum to both
female and rural learners.
Website Maintenance
From 7 to 23 August, 2003, an International UN Volunteer (IUNV) from
the organization Seniores Italia, on a short-term assignment with
the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), was involved
in maintaining a website that serves as a "one-stop" location
for all relevant regional drug control information. Serving under
, the IUNV supported the establishment
of a regional drugs information database, which is now available
on the website. The project aims to improve regional operational
coordination on drug control issues among ASEAN countries and China
by establishing a regional drugs information database into which
participating countries and organizations feed information. The IUNV
provided a "professional eye," reviewing the current site
with the project team, making recommendations as to how to improve
it and initiating the required changes.
