ICT Strategy for Government
One National and one International Volunteer (NUNV and IUNV) worked with the Government of Tanzania and its National ICT Council to expand access to ICT training and the Internet in the country. The Volunteers provided substantive advice to each member of the Council on ICT policies and strategies, and developed outreach activities to institutions and companies served by the Council. These Volunteers also involved online volunteers in an online community called eThinkTankTz that served as an ongoing advisory debate and discussion about ICT issues that could help Tanzania.

Supporting Cisco Academies
From October 2002 to September 2003, a National UN Volunteer (NUNV) served under the Cisco Networking Academy Program (CNAP), a comprehensive, e-learning program, which provides students with the Internet technology skills essential in a global economy. The Networking Academy program delivers web-based content, on-line assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support, and preparation for industry-standard certifications. This UN Volunteer identified and recruited universities and other institutions into the Cisco Networking Academy Program. He also supported the Government in the formulation of national ICT policy and the UNDP offices in strategic ICT projects. He solicited funding for Academy equipment and trained new trainers. In addition, the Volunteer acted as secretary to the ICT donors group supporting Tanzania, chaired by the UNDP. In 2003, he recruited the best female Cisco graduate into the UN Volunteer program.

This graduate, whose one-year contract began in June 2002, gave lectures on Cisco curriculum and wrote weekly reports to the Cisco headquarters. She assisted about fifty students in the Academy, encouraging interested female students to join the program. With the support of the Volunteers, fourteen Academies have been created in Tanzania, training nearly 700 students annually.
