Web Design Training and Capacity Building for ICT
From June 2001 to August 2002, International UN Volunteers (IUNVs) from George Mason University and the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid were active in Ecuador. Read here for information on UNITeS partnerships with universities.

From June to July 2001, a George Mason IUNV assisted the the South American Explorers Club (SAEC), a well-known non-profit organization aiding travelers to South and Central America and organizing scientific and cultural events. The Volunteer created an extensive database in Linux which is used to list volunteer opportunities through SAEC in Ecuador.

Another University Volunteer worked with Red Cantaro, an umbrella organization for seven NGOs in Ecuador, with the aim of improving human development and strengthening educational opportunities and environmental awareness. From June to July 2001, the IUNV designed the organization's website, and those of the affiliated organizations, in both Spanish and English.

In cooperation with both an onsite UN Volunteer and a group of local student volunteers, five George Mason University Volunteers supported the Management Development Project 'Loja Competitiva' in its goal to enhance the creation of new enterprises and investments. From June to July 2001, their contributions focused on the elaboration of the project's web page and on generating indicators and objectives to improve technology communication systems.

From June to August 2002, a further George Mason IUNV assisted the local organization 'Coordinadora Política de Mujeres' (CPME) by providing computer technology training, offering advice on the elaboration, design and use of websites, and offering support in the different uses of new technologies in CPME Headquarters and several sub-offices around the country.

From June to July and October to December of 2001, two George Mason University Volunteers were in charge of training local volunteers of the "Asociación Coordinadora del Voluntario del Guayas" (ACORVOL) on using basic data processing software and web design programs. The Volunteers also provided support in the design of ACORVOL's website.

In August 2002, in two-month and a four-month assignments, two IUNVs from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid trained ARCOVOL’s volunteers on using basic data processing software and web design programs. Additionally, they helped design ACORVOL's website.

Database Management, Training and Capacity Building in ICT
In the scope of a new Ecuador-Peru Binational Border Zone Development Plan, an International UN Volunteer (IUNV) assisted in setting up an interactive information system to support the Binational Plan and helped develop a communication strategy. From October 2000 to 2001, the IUNV supported the set-up of relational databases, developed websites, trained local individuals, local government workers and community-based organizations in the use of the systems and worked with counterparts on frequent information updating.

Software Marketing
From 13 June to 29 July 2002, under UNV’s Corporate Sector Program, an International UN Volunteer (IUNV) from Seniores Italia in Italy assisted the “Corporation de Promocion de exportaciones e inversiones” (CORPEI) in the development of a plan for the marketing and commercialization of software. The IUNV performed needs assessments of software companies and provided them with advice on market planning, export and controls. By the end of his assignment, he had completed a Software Plan. In a follow-up visit from October 14 to 30, he noted that companies had already started to systematically implement his advice.
