Completed Assignments [Partnership Opportunities]

Below are completed projects that were affiliated with UN Volunteers and where ICTs were (and often, still are) being applied to development. The information below includes details regarding types of volunteers (UNV Internationals, UNV Nationals, university volunteers, or corporate volunteers), as well as collaborating organizations and funding resources. This table is updated regularly.

Albania  

In 2002, a UN Volunteer from Italy on short-term assignment trained the staff of the company FAGUS srl to use computers in order to design models of wooden furniture, prior to their production, since this technique allows better adjustments than drawing the models on paper.

(University Volunteer Assignment)
 

ICT/ Web Designer for UNV Youth Confidence Building Project
The volunteer assists in the promotion of the project, mainly through improving the project's website, which includes updating information through intranet and other relevant sources, organizing and expanding the site, and troubleshooting operational problems. Functions as Help Desk for all users providing assistance to their needs and requests as well as training them on software programs.

George Mason University


Botswana  

UNV Volunteers, volunteers from George Mason University, and others serving under the UNITeS coalition, have undertaken a range of activities in Botswana, including supporting the national Botswana WorLD programme to introduce ICT tools for improved learning in a group of secondary schools, training the staff of the Botswana Girl Guides Association and its affiliates on using basic communication and computer skills, and supporting an organization that provides technology resources to allow people to access and utilize information in pursuit of learning about entrepreneurship development. Burundi  

UNITeS is supporting the Government of Burundi and UNDP in their undertaking of an "e-readiness" assessment. [more]

 

Democratic Republic of Congo  

An Italian short-term volunteer assisted the Association “SOS Jeunesse en Détresse” from 1 March to 28 May, 2003, in training disadvantaged youth in computer sciences, electronics and new technologies such as internet, multi-media, installation of networks, cellular technology. One month after the training course, one third of the attendees found a job.

 

Ecuador

  A UN Volunteer, local volunteers, and volunteers from George Mason University serving under the UNITeS coalition have undertaken a range of activities in Ecuador, including helping to design the Intranet and updating the web site of the UN Documentation Center in Ecuador, creating an extensive Linux-based database of volunteering opportunities for a well-known non-profit organization for people traveling to South and Central America for scientific and cultural events, supporting the Management Development Project's 'Loja Competitiva' in its goal to enhance the creation of new enterprises and investments, assisting a local organization that encourages political activities by women with ICT capacity activities, and training a local NGO's volunteers on using basic data processing software and web design programs. Egypt
(UNDP)
 

One of the first ICT volunteering projects affiliated with UNITeS was a community technology center, funded by UNDP, on the West Bank in Luxor. [more]

 

Ethiopia  

A UN Volunteer from Japan, who was a Production Manager at Intuit K.K. e-Finance Group, Japan, assisted UNDP in establishing new ICT programmes, such as "IT for High Schools" and "Computerization and Connectivity" of Government Institutions, from October 2001 to January 2002. She returned for a follow-up mission from February to April 2002, supporting the Government in developing national ICT policies, assisting UNDP in resource mobilization for ICT activities, and conducting training in basic ICT skills for community centers and educational institutions.

 

Guyana  

In 2001, a UN Volunteer from Ireland assisted the Geology and Mines Commission in developing a software that enables the establishment of a "small claims mines database", to facilitate the preparation of periodic reports and statistics as well as various transactions (23 June to 19 August).

 

Kosovo
(University Volunteer Assignment)

 

  Intranet Developer for UNDP
For the UNDP-Kosovo Office, the volunteer undertakes the development of a task-oriented Intranet, which forms the central aspect of the new ICT system. Duties range from executing and structuring the overall design, monitoring the site, ensuring Intranet security, providing current updating, and offering training for the staff.

Niger  

In 2000, a UN Volunteer from Italy assisted the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on a short-term assignment, training the staff on information technology and advising on the development of an accounting software. [more]

 

Paraguay  

In 2001, a UN Volunteer from Italy assisted the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in developing an e-commerce platform (29 April to 14 May, 2001).

 

South Africa
(Japanese Trust Fund)

UNITeS is supporting SANGONET, a non-profit internet service provider reaching out to communities, in the development of web sites and available sources of information to NGOs and CBOs. [more]
