Lifting the Barriers to Education
In March 2004, three National UN Volunteers (NUNVs) teamed with Cisco colleagues in Beijing and Chengdu to implement the Cisco Networking Academy Program in China, where they will work on the project for one year. Their focus is on identifying strategic universities and institutions in China and enrolling them in the Cisco Networking Academy Program (CNAP) and they have, to date, managed to enroll more than 15,000 students throughout the country. The NUNVs are trying to popularize the program, especially in the less developed areas of Western China and among female learners. By providing specific support to these groups, they are striving to diminish the socioeconomic and geographic barriers to education.
