Ecuador

A UN Volunteer, local volunteers, and volunteers from George Mason University serving under the UNITeS coalition have undertaken a range of ICT capacity-building activities in Ecuador:

  • One volunteer served as a Systems Development Assistant for the UN Documentation Center in Ecuador, helping to design the Center's Intranet, based on a Linux server, and ensuring its smooth operation. The volunteer also guided the center on the improvement and updating of its web site (June - August 2001).


  • The South American Explorers Club (SAEC) is a well-known non-profit organization for people traveling to South and Central America and organizer of scientific and cultural events. Another George Mason University volunteer created an extensive database in Linux which is used to list volunteer opportunities through SAEC in Ecuador (June - July 2001).


  • Red Cantaro is an umbrella organization for seven NGOs in Ecuador, and aims to improve human development, and to strengthen educational opportunities and environmental awareness. One George Mason University volunteer design the organization's web site, and those of each affiliated organization, in both Spanish and English (June - July 2001).


  • n cooperation with both an onsite UN Volunteer and a group of local student volunteers, five George Mason University volunteers supported the Management Development Project 'Loja Competitiva' in its goal to enhance the creation of new enterprises and investments. Their contributions focused on the elaboration of the project's web page and on generating indicators and objectives to improve technology communication systems (June - July 2001).


  • George Mason University volunteer assisted the local organization 'Coordinadora Política de Mujeres' (CPME) by providing computer technology training, giving advice about the elaboration, design and use of websites, and offering support in requirements about the different uses of new technologies in CPME Headquarters and several sub-offices around the country (June - August 2002).


  • Two George Mason University volunteers were in charge of training local volunteers of the "Asociación Coordinadora del Voluntario del Guayas" (ACORVOL) on using basic data processing software and web design programs. The volunteers also provided support designing ACORVOL's website (June - July 2001 and October - December 2001)
